While many of us do not SEE hunger or poverty, it is a sad and growing reality within the Jewish community and beyond.
Did you know that:
- 57,195 Canadian Jews live below the poverty line (14.6% of Jews living in Canada)
- More than 24,000 (13%) of Jews across the GTA live below the Low Income Cut Off (LICO) line ($20,386 after tax). 5000 are seniors (2,250 are Holocaust survivors), 3500+ are children under 15
- 22.90% live in York Region, 15.50% live in downtown, 59.60% live in between
Poverty in the Jewish community is dramatically increasing due to community growth, aging population, economic downturn, unemployment rate, slow wage growth for low income earners, single parent households, and government cutbacks to programs. It’s going to take all of us to change the system.
At Shoresh, we are committed to Tzedakah (justice) From the Ground Up. We do this by growing produce with and for community members in need at both Maxie’s Garden and the Kavanah Garden.
This growing season join our Tzedakah Garden Crew, an awesome team of volunteers who learn, grow and harvest produce together. Volunteers meet every Wednesday afternoon at Shoresh’s Kavanah Garden in Vaughan to grow local, organic veggies for the Chasdei Kaduri Food Bank.
Grow your green thumb while building community and helping community members in need.
