It’s Our B’nei Mitzvah and I’m Hiking the Bruce – Jacob’s B’nei Mitzvah Adventure

This year is a very special year for Shoresh… we are celebrating our B’nei Mitzvah!

In honour of this milestone, we are celebrating all of the amazing people, pollinators, and plants that make Shoresh so special.

Today, we’d like to honour our friend Jacob Pozin, who is also celebrating his 13th year this year!

Read about the beautiful way that he is commemorating this milestone below:

With my Bar Mitzvah just a few months, I am heading off on a big adventure with my dad which will be my Mitzvah project. My dad and I are planning to hike the entire Bruce Trail (about 900 km) in the month of July. We will be backpacking and hiking about 30 km a day.

In preparing for my Bar Mitzvah I have been learning, in part, about the relationship between Jacob and his father Isaac. It was not always an easy one. This adventure will test my relationship with my dad too. It is going to be very tough but I’m pretty sure it will bring us even closer together (most days anyway).

My month on the Bruce will bring me very close to nature (probably bugs, hopefully not too many bears). Getting outside and connecting to nature is very important for our health and well-being, especially now. Before COVID, my sister Ella and I did a couple of Shoresh Outdoor School seasons. I had a lot of fun learning with them in nature at Cedarvale Park each week. My family also visited their 100-acre farm, Bela Farm, in Hillsburgh. I decided that I wanted to raise money for them as park of my hiking challenge so they can plant trees and care for the bees.

I was surprised to learn Shoresh is in their 13th year just like me and they will be celebrating their B’nei Mitzvah just before mine! I made some different sponsorship categories for my family and friends to choose from. Here are some examples:

Give Me Your 2 Cents Worth – 2 cents per km (up to $18)
Just a Kid from the 6ix on the Bruce – 6 cents per km (up to $54)
Yes, I AM Worth a Dime – 10 cents per km (up to $90)
Don’t Look Back on 2020 – 20 cents per km (up to $180)

I have a donation page set up on CanadaHelps.org. If I raise $360, one of 13 hazelnut trees especially for B’Nei Mitzvah kids this year will be planted in my honour by Shoresh. (Or I might get to plant it!) I’m hoping to raise $900, a dollar for every kilometre of the Bruce trail. Already my family and friends have collectively sponsored me for $1.50 for every kilometre I walk. So now it’s all about how far I can make it! https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/its-our-bnei-mitzvah-im-hiking-the-bruce/
