Growing to Give

The Tzedakah Garden Crew at Shoresh’s Kavanah Garden is a labour of love. Made up of Shoresh staff, volunteers and community members, the Tzedakah Garden Crew is an intentional group of members that are passionate about food justice, environmental stewardship and Tzedakah (Justice/Charity).

With the objective of taking on the roles of  “Shomrei Adamah, שומרי האדמה” (Guardians of the Land), our Garden Crew attends each week with these objectives.

Every Wednesday at 3pm we begin with a guest speaker facilitating a workshop on a relevant topic, some topics include; Urban Sustainability, Pollinator Monitoring, Nutrition, Food Justice in the Jewish Community and more!

After the Garden Crew gets to experience these hands on workshops, we get started on the environmental stewardship piece. Garden care activities can include; building structures, watering and weeding the garden beds, and general education on the different organic foods growing at the Kavanah Garden!

The Tzedakah piece of the Tzedakah Garden Crew takes the form of food donations. At the garden, everything that is grown, is grown for donation to Chasdei Kiduri Jewish Food Bank. The garden provides fresh, local and organic produce to those in need across York Region through this food bank.

We finish our Wednesday’s with the whole team coming together to harvest, weigh and package the produce so that it is ready for when a Chasdei Kiduri volunteer comes to pick it up!

These opportunities to get in touch with the land, with community and to be able to give back are only some of the reasons why people keep coming back week after week!
