Kavanah Garden - Education Intern
Part-time (8-12 hours/week) from May-October
Location: Kavanah Garden (18 Lebovic Campus Drive, Vaughan)
About Shoresh and the Kavanah Garden:
Shoresh was established in 2002 to lead the Jewish environmental movement in the Greater Toronto Area. Through educational programs and grassroots initiatives, rooted in Jewish social and environmental values, Shoresh is working to build a more connected and ecologically sustainable Jewish community.
In 2009, Shoresh established the Kavanah Garden, an organic educational garden that models Jewish agricultural laws and environmental ethics, as its flagship programming space. Located at the Lebovic Jewish Community Campus in Vaughan, the Kavanah Garden features 100 varieties of organic vegetables, herbs, and wildflowers; raised wheelchair-accessible garden beds; educational signage in Hebrew and English; outdoor kitchen; and guided nature trail.
All food produced at Shoresh’s Kavanah Garden is donated to local social service organizations.
About the Internship:
Working 8-12 hours/week, Education Interns will help facilitate hands-on garden-based programs at the Kavanah Garden during the 2012 growing season. Programs include:
- Elementary Day School Programs
- Congregational School Programs
- Weekly Free Family-Drop In Program
- Kavanah Kids Summer Program
- Community Festivals and Holiday Celebrations
As core members of the Kavanah Garden Team, Education Interns will gain valuable experience
- facilitating Jewish outdoor education programs and activities
- working with community members of varying ages, abilities, and backgrounds
- developing innovative curriculum and producing experiential curriculum materials
- planting and managing organic garden spaces
Education Interns will participate, free of charge, in Shoresh’s multi day training in Jewish Outdoor Education and receive a copy of the Kavanah Garden Curriculum Manual. As well, Education Interns are welcome to participate in Shoresh workshops, learning sessions, and fieldtrips, free of charge.
A small stipend will be issued upon completion of the full-season internship.
To Apply:
No experience or Jewish education necessary. Applicants must be committed, hardworking, positive, curious, open to the many different ways that people express themselves “Jewishly,” and experience the natural world with a sense of wonder. Shoresh staff, interns, and volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and we strongly value diversity.
To apply, please send a copy of your resume to Risa Alyson Cooper (Director) at risa@shoresh.ca with “Education Intern” in the subject line. In your cover letter, please answer the following questions:
- How did you hear about this internship?
- What skills and talents will you bring to this internship?
- What skills and experiences are you opening to take away from this internship?
- What does gardening “Jewishly” mean to you?
Ideally, applicants will be able to commit to the full growing season (May-October). Shortened/extended internships are a possibility. In addition to Education Interns, Shoresh is also accepting applications for 1-2 Garden Interns who will focus more heavily on organic gardening and less on educational programming. A blended internship is possible.
Are you a university student? We will happily work with your professors and school administration to see if this internship can count for course credit.
Space is limited. Spots will be filled on a rolling basis, with special consideration given to individuals who submit their applications by March 16, 2012.
For more information, or if you have any questions, please contact Risa at 416-805-8382 or risa@shoresh.ca.
