Shoresh's Jewish Environmental Educator Training
May 7-9, 2012
Location: Shoresh's Kavanah Garden (18 Lebovic Campus Drive)
Cost: $180 (includes resource manual)
In this 3 day training, open to teachers, educators, counsellors, and community volunteers, participants will look at various Jewish environmental and agricultural texts in both Hebrew and English and learn numerous activities and initiatives to teach these concepts and values to community members of all ages, from all across the Jewish spectrum. Participants will receive an invaluable resource manual, which will include lesson plans and activities for both elementary day school and congregational programs (including Ontario Ministry of Education's Science and Technology curriculum links and Jewish curriculum links such as holiday celebrations and Jewish ethics.) Using the Kavanah Garden as our classroom, participants will also learn organic gardening skills and how to create opportunities for experiential education in a garden or nature-based setting. The cost of the full 3 day training is $180 and includes the resource manual.
The training will be facilitated by Risa Alyson Cooper, Director of Shoresh Jewish Environmental Programs and Founder of the Kavanah Garden. Risa has over 8 years experience in Jewish environmental education. She was trained at the Teva Learning Center (www.tevacenter.org) in Connecticut where she worked as a Jewish environmental educator and Wilderness Programs Coordinator for 5 years. Risa also spent 2 years coordinating the City of Toronto's Children's Garden Programs.
To register, contact Risa Alyson Cooper at risa@shoresh.ca or 416-805-8382. Space is very limited.
Staff Training & Profesional Development
Interested in bringing Jewish environmental education into your school, synagogue, camp or institution? Hire a Shoresh educator to run a creative and engaging workshop for your teachers, counselors and educators! Each workshop highlights Judaism’s rich ecological teachings while equipping participants with the resources and activities needed to easily weave Jewish environmentalism into school, synagogue or camp programming. Work with a Shoresh educator to create a professional development workshop unique to your institution or select from a range of workshops, such as:
Jewish Environmental Learning 101
Judaism is rich in texts and teachings that encourage and demand us to adopt a strong environmental ethic. In this workshop, participants will study the core sources that frame the Jewish environmental movement while learning fun and hands-on activities to introduce these teachings into their school/classroom.
Jewish Garden-Based Learning 101
The Garden of Eden was the first outdoor classroom! Learn how to set up, maintain, and harvest your organic garden (whether it be a few planted containers or a ½ acre field) while practicing and modeling Jewish agricultural laws and environmental ethics. Participants will take away organic gardening resources as well as numerous experiential program and activity ideas to actively engage their students in Jewish garden-based learning.
As well, any of Shoresh’ Adult Learning Sessions can be converted into a staff/educator training session.
